LILIN Destroys the Dark Arts and creates Total Ghaos
The Brief
Central to the exhibition was a multi level scaffolding structure that participants needed to negotiate in order to progress through the event. One particular challenge faced by Reactor was that the project required all audience member movements and actions to be watched, followed and recorded throughout the structure by other audience members, allowing decisions to be made about the development of the ‘Total Ghaos world’.
A network was required by Reactor to monitor and record audience’s progress, with participants taking control both in front of and behind the cameras as interaction between the audience and the network developed.
The project also needed documentation to produce a film of the event, allowing many more people to view the exhibition who may not have been able to attend. Individuals displaying actions that crossed the Total Ghaos Party Line needed to be identified on the film and dealt with accordingly.
The Solution
With the aim to make the ‘Total Ghaos world’ as accessible and visible as possible, LILIN created a unique experience for audience members. A network of CCTV cameras, Digital Video Recorders and workstations were especially designed for the arts event to monitor and record participant progress. Products were used in a conventional CCTV system framework but in an unconventional environment.
Cameras were controlled from viewing control stations within the structure where users operating keyboard controllers could have access to different groups of cameras located throughout the exhibition. Participants could then decide which camera to watch and control, whom to watch and what to film.
Using the RS-Series Digital Video Recorder, Reactor were able to document the project so footage of all cameras were recorded, allowing editing at a later date in order to produce a film of the event.
Certain cameras were streamed live over the internet to allow a worldwide audience to view the action, both live and recorded, and join Reactor in its final push for Total Ghaos.
The Result
The exhibition attendees were given access to a side of CCTV technology that they usually witness in a restricted sense, being filmed in shops and on the streets. This allowed hundreds of people to use CCTV technology within an unusual and memorable environment.
These products enabled many people to get a better overview of the Total Ghaos world and find out what was happening in other areas of the exhibition. They helped catch many audience members who dared to attempt to cross the party line and in conjunction with the on line web cast they helped many other people around the world witness the event.
LILIN's CCTV products provided the functionality and manageability to be used by a number of different individuals whilst maintaining reliability. Dan Willamson, Events Manager, Reactor, commented: ‘The system was robust and flexible, covering many angles, and the keyboard controllers were accessible and easy to use for a cross section of the public across a wide age range from 7-70 years old’.
