The wide dynamic cameras are an emerging technology that goes several steps further than existing DSP controlled backlight compensation. It uses a new generation of imaging chips which work quite differently to existing CCD  cameras by reading both the bright and dark areas of the image simultaneously but independently.

Then real time DSP combines both images into one, giving clarity of image in both extremes without any blooming or image smear.
